Notes on dimensioning

Choosing parallel axis model, it must be born in mind that, while for automatic machines it may seem useful to maximise rest time and minimise displacement time, the lengthening of the time dedicated to displacement contributes to decrease elastic vibrations and inertia loads.

In fact, the torque due to inertia is directly proportional to the square of the number of cycles and inversely proportional to the square of the displacement angle. The best solution lies in a compromise between displacement time and rest time.

Calculation of the torque applied to the output shaft is essential for choosing indexer wheelbase (I). In fact, by increasing I, the indexer can tolerate greater torque on the output shaft.

The torque applicable to the output shaft is divided into static torque (Ms) and dynamic torque (Mu). The first one is a constant of the mechanism, while the second one is a decreasing function of the number of cycles, due to forces of inertia applied to the mechanism.

In choosing the number of stops (S), consider that when possible it is best to choose the lowest number of stations, so that the torque required at parallel axis output is decreased.
